Maybe you startled him. Hamsters will wake up to eat and then go back to sleep, and when they are in this stage, they aren't fully awake. Dont worry about it. You just scared him.

Unfortunately this is pretty normal behavior for a hamster. Hamsters are notorious for biting.

I'm not sure about the male hamster but I know females can be moody especialy when they're gestating or nursing. Try this website they have a question and answer section.

Was the last time you tried holding him a month ago? If so, that is your problem. Hamsters become mean if you don't handle them almost daily. I learned that the hard way as well. Glad that little monster is dead.

You might have scared him. My hamster bit me a few times before I learned to make sure he saw me reaching for him so he would't jump and bite.

Look around his cage see if anything is bothering him. Is there any females anywhere he could smell?

Do you have any younger sibling? When they hold him are they shaking him or doing things he doesn't like to make him not trust you holding him?
