They'll have a war the likes of which have never been seen. The civil war was nothing compared to the war we'll see if they try to disarm American gun owners.

We would have to repeal the Second Amendment! It is a part of the Bill of Rights, a document that was so important that some states would not ratify the Constitution until they were promised that it would be forthcoming.

I am not a gun fan, would not have one in my home, but I would not support taking away Second Amendment rights. However, I do wonder why it is necessary for citizens to have assault rifles and other automatic weapons...

what is it about Americans and guns? I know the right to bear arms is part of the country's birthright, but I'm pretty sure that shoot-outs in the street and people owning heavy duty weaponry weren't part of the founding father's thoughts. Why would anyone outside the army need an automatic weapon of any description?
The whole gun lobby distorts the political process in the US stunts the hope of any social progress (You want to help the poor - you must hate guns, right?)

I think it is criminal. The 2nd amendment to the Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms.

There is no other tool in the world that can defend the elderly, the feeble, the week, the disabled from criminals bent on their rape, pillage, or destruction as easily as a gun. You don't have to be young, strong, and coordinated to use one.

Most people can learn to handle guns safely and shoot effectively with a few lessons and some practice.

I'm a not a fan of guns, but I don't believe that they (not including assault rifles and others of that type) should be taken away from law abiding citizens. There should be restrictions yes, but if you are responsible and have the gun for a legal purpose, then it's ok to have one.

There's an old saying "when they came for X group, no one stood up, when they came for Y group I remained silent, but when they came for me there was no one else to stand up for me."

The founders clearly believed that firearms should stay in the hands of private citizens (See Federalist Papers that were written by Madison, who also penned the Constitution, Jay, and Hamilton.

I'll stand up for any legitimate right, but taking a persons right to choose according to liberals is the worst thing that conservatives can do. What I don't get is when there is a legitimate right that was acknowledged by THE two founding documents, the right to life, why the try to deny the right of us who want to go home to our families the right to choose to carry a weapon

Send the Liberals to Canada.

edit: To the people who think private citizens should not be able to carry; You've never been a victim of a car jacking while you were in the car have you? You've never had an intuder try and/or succed in entering your home have you? You've never happened to meander into the path of some looneybin with a pistol have you? Didn't think so. Carry on with your 'Leave it to Beaver' lives.

I think it is just awful and should not be done at all. I assume you are from the States, and one of our vital rights is the right to keep and bear arms. It should stay.

Countries that have voluntarily given up their guns were worse afterwards because it made the average citizen vulnerable to their government and to criminals.

It's not like I have the right to SHOOT anybody anyway...;-)

Just kidding. Simplest response I can think of is something from Edward Abbey (hated and loved by liberals):

When they outlaw guns, only the government will have guns.

Look at our crime and murder rate by guns in comparison to most any other country on the earth. Collect them all and throw them in the ocean.
