The reason PCOS patients may have trouble getting pregnant is that they may not ovulate regularly. The less often you ovulate, the harder it might be to get pregnant. However, most women with PCOS can get pregnant either on their own or with some medical assistance.

If you are overweight, diet and exercise for weight loss may help restore ovulation. PCOS patients are often advised to eat a low-carb diet because many of us have underlying insulin resistance. However, insulin resistance makes it difficult for some of us to lose weight.

The diabetes drug metformin helps many women with PCOS to ovulate normally. This works by treating the underlying insulin resistance behind many cases of PCOS, which in turn causes the ovaries to function more normally. Many women with PCOS can get pregnant on metformin; however, it is not a fertility drug. It simply helps the ovaries to function normally.

Some women with PCOS may use the fertility drug Clomid to help them ovulate. However, metformin therapy is often attempted first.

Depending on how often you ovulate, you may be able to get pregnant without any help at all. If you have trouble getting pregnant, though, remember that treatment is available. Also, be sure to have your partner's sperm count checked too--if he has a low sperm count, it will be harder to get pregnant.

Check out www.soulcysters.net, it's a message board for women with PCOS and many of them are TTC (trying to conceive).
