Lobster fishermen band the pincers, known technically as the chelapeds, of their catch for preventive reasons: lobsters are feisty crustaceans and tend to fight for territory, especially when in close quarters such as in the hold of a fishing vessel. There's a specific tool they use, one is even branded with the clever name of the 'Lobster Bandit', which looks like a big pair of pliers, and some company actually manufactures special rubber bands built just for lobsters!

Believe it or not, there's even a 'celebrity' lobster-banding contest held in Pictou, in Canada every year as part of their Lobster Carnival, where noted figures (well, okay, a parliamentary member and the local tourist advisor) vied for the coveted title of fastest lobster bander in town.

Lobster fishermen put the rubberbands on the pincers of lobsters immediately after they are taken from the pot (trap), so that they won't fight in the lobster holding tanks below deck.
