Honey, NOTHING in life is free!

Somebody, somewhere, somehow, pays for it, even if you don't. If you get a "free" meal at a restaurant, that means the restaurant is charging enough for the paid meals to cover the cost of the "free" one.

Free meals at a shelter? Somebody paid for the food before it was donated to the shelter.

If nothing else, the farmer who raised the crop paid for it. He had to put in time, money and labor to plant, fertilize and harvest the crop.

It's not just food. The saying "There's no such thing as a free lunch" can refer to anything that is supposedly free.

Definitely no such thing as a free lunch. It is all a zero sum game any way you measure it... economically, socially, spiritually. Even food bank programs cost communities a lot of money and volunteer resources and cost the people who receive the food their dignity. It's just not all measured in cash.

When I was young I had to suffer the embarassment of free lunches. I was ashamed, but I was also hungry and I cleaned my plate, too. Today I don't think they have that program. I don't know what they use in it's place these days. Hopefully the kids aren't going hungry. If you're homeless theres soup lines at the salvation army and there's other programs that feed the homeless. Some times you need a free meal to get you going. Yes, some times you need it.
