you sound as though the aquarium is facing a window from the front or the sides of the doorway or you lieave the over head light on most of the time. If so, either move you tank to a different location or block the sides facing the tank (unless it is the from that is facing a window) by using some tank coverings with pixs on them or decorative tissue paper etc. 90% of the time the fast algae growth is due to one of these two problems

If your tank is in direct sunlight for long periods of time, you'll have to move the tank to a less sunny spot. Another option is to buy some Flying Foxes (they can be put in a saltwater or freshwater tank) or other algae eating fish. A fish tank is always going to have algae. It signifies that the tank is healthy. Algae is definitly annoying, even though if means the tank is healthy!

If you have it near a window, move it. Sunlight will cause algae to grow in a matter of days.
If it isn't near a window, then I have no clue. Try taking a water sample in to a reputable pet store. They might be able to tell you what the problem is.

Good Luck!

Is it in direct sunlight? If so, close the curtains or consider moving the tank.

How are your nitrates and kH? Are they high? Try doing a water change.

Does the temperature fluctuate on the high side at all? Keep an eye on it.

How often do you keep your aquarium light on? Try turning it off for a couple of days.

Good luck!

There are special lights that you can buy to help with an algae tank. There are also different products out there that will help. I use the website www.liveaquaria.com, it is very helpful.
