A reciever provides the ability to co-ordinate a variety of inputs, and place them on selected outputs. A reciever will also amplify signals, but on a relatively small scale.

An amplifier has higher powered components, and is designed to provide much greater signal boosting.

However, in today's world of consumer electronics where home theatre has become relatively mainstream, the difference is, at best, moot. I believe the terms are frequently used interchangeably.

a receiver is designed to reciever radio frequencies (RF) in the AM/FM bands. There are specialty receivers, such used by HAM operators for HF/SSB signals or VHF/UHF receivers used by aircraft both civilian and military. Todays units are already equiped with an audio amplifier, some capable of handling Digital, analog or optic signals. Amplifiers are for amplification input signals. There are many type of amplifiers for specific purposes such as an auto amp to boost a subwoofer. Your need may be for an audio amplifier. Hope this helps.

Sounds like an audio question and you are in the computer forum.
The only diff I know of between an amp and a receiver is that a receiver has a tuner built into it (ie - amp with radio).
