An ant farm. When I was in nineth grade biology, my assignment was to keep a bug alive, in captivity for six weeks. The teacher said he didn't want ant farms because we wanted us to create a habitate for our insects. During the six weeks, we had to spend time each day, caring for our insects, we had to study their movements and write about what they did... sorta kept a diary. Well, I decided to have an ant farm. I made it from two pieces of glass, with wood strips in between, there was a place in the top that I could open and close. I looked up things about ants, found out what they liked and how much water they needed. I dug into a hill of little brown ants and filled the ant farm with dirt and ants. I put black paper on the out sides of the ant farm, cause they like building in the dark, and I waited a couple of hours. When I took the black paper off, I could see were the ants built little tunnels and underground rooms. I was like a little underground city. I caught a big black ant and put it into the ant farm, the little ants attacked the big black ant and tore him appart. Some times I would give my ants some sugar water or cookie crumbs. I would experiment with different food offerings. I wrote every thing in a little daily diary. In my paper, I also had a picture that explained what each part of the ants' body was and wrote a short report about ants. I got an A++++++. I really impressed my teacher and I enjoyed my ants. It was the easiest A that I ever got, cause I had fun doing my little experiments with the ants. Thwe bug world is amazing ....good luck

Test which brand of batteries last the longest. That's what I did in the 8th grade.

I took a toy monkey that plays the drums, music, and moves a little and put the batteries in untill they were dead- I remember Energizer won it beat out second place Duracell by 30 min. Then I made a bar graph on how long the brands lasted and put it on a poster. Just put them inside something that will wear out the batteries in a few hours like a big toy that does lots of things.

Measure the speed of sound using a video camera and firecrackers. For extra credit: measure how the speed of sound changes with air temperature.

hmm.....well, telescopes are always good. I love astronomy so I built a telescope for fun one summer and it turned out great. As far as a project is concerned, you could research how telescopes work and how NASA uses them and maybe you could even build one yourself.

Lightbulb seems to be good. You can show the timeline of its history and the future trend too (LED="Light-emitting diode").
