I wanted one since I was 12. I wore stick-ons until I was 17 and mom signed (I paid). This was a 5 YEAR DECISION that was unwavering. I feel that they are a (still pretty much), permanent decision. They are not to be rushed into. I went to a reputable tattoo parlor. I made sure of the hygiene, health codes, etc. I talked to the owners about all my concerns. I got 3 butterflies over 2 years. I knew I had found a good place, because I got some good advice. I had wanted one of the tattoos on my forearm. The guy said that would be a bad idea for going out into the work force where exposure of a tattoo would most likely be frowned upon. The tattoos are all on my upper left arm, and can be easily covered.
Bottom line: Mature decision, not something to be rushed. I'd experiment with fakes (stick-on's) first. Find a safe establishment. Until tattoo removal becomes cheap and less painful than I've seen it on Discovery Channel, pick something you can live with when you are old and wrinkled! :) Also, I know in my area, a person has to be 21 now to get a tattoo. No parental sign, either. That's a b****, but if the law is the same by you, don't let it rush you into getting a tattoo someplace unsanitary. I answered this question with the notion that you were considering getting a tattoo, not already having had one. Hope I helped.

I think if a ta too holds meaning and is special to you then it is okay...I don't like seeing people get tattoos just because they want to be a certain type of person...tattoos are not going to help you in that fact of life...oh well...there the ones with that crap on them.
I have the sun on one shoulder and the moon on the other..they watch my back and are the most beautiful heavenly bodies in the sky...I'm a little obsessed with the sun and the moon...but it's special..and that's all that matters

The funniest commentary on "lower back tattoos" was performed recently on Saturday Night Live. I hope you get the chance to see it before making a final decision.

Its too permanent, I know allot of people who regret having a tattoo, but, the cost to have them removed is ridiculous..... They eventually fade, some people keep them up, I guess that's OK, if that's all you got to do with your life..

I don't like them. If you want to express yourself, get something pierced. At least that way when you get tired of it you can take it out and its gone. But a tattoo, your stuck with!

They don't appeal to me. Guys look like they're just trying to build up their masculinity and I'm just turned off by girls who have them because tattoos make me think of old grizzly sailors. To each his own but I think they detract from peoples appearance.

A couple aren't bad, but beyound that on might be looking at skin cancers and other problems. Hep C is a biggie that can be spread through the ink.
