so you can read it in your review mirror.

Generally, it isn't very easy to read words in a mirror, so this word is written in its mirror image (on the front of the vehicle only) so that when perceived through a rear-view mirror, the mirror images cancel each other and result in a coherent term. AMBULANCE is written normally on the rest of the vehicle as it is more likely viewed directly.

So when you read it in your rear-view mirror when it comes up behind you, you can read it correctly. Apparently, they did studies and found that, flashing lights and blaring siren notwithstanding, when "ambulance" was spelled "properly", people couldn't read it in their rear-view and didn't know what to do, i.e. pull over. Not being able to read "ambulance" when the vehicle is coming toward you apparently wasn't a problem (by this same study) since people could recognise this "thing" as an ambulance and knew what to do.

So that when you are driving and the Ambulance comes up behind your car, you can look in your rear-view mirror and see the bold "AMBULANCE" written on the front.

everyone is saying the same thing--> "so you can read it in the rearview mirror"...

but wouldn't the blaring siren, flashing lights, and everyone moving off the road give it away??

Just a little something I've always wondered about... honestly if you can't tell its an ambulance without having to READ that its an ambulance in your rearview mirror, you don't need to be driving...

the word is written backwards so that if your driving you can look in your mirror and see the word correctly and you realize you need to pull over and let the ambulence go ahead!!

So when you are driving, if you don't hear the sirens you can at least look in the mirror and read that its an ambulance approaching.

So you can see it in your rearview mirror when its behind you on the road and then you move over quickly. Unless you are from calgary and then you just stay where you are and ignore the emergency like the ignorant calgarian you are.

Ex Ontarian! I miss the common sense.
