When I was a kid growing up in New Orleans, there was an old house in the Vieux Carre on Rue Royale. It has been the home of a cruel woman named Delphine Lalaurie. To the outside world she appeared as the pinnacle of social standing; married to a popular doctor, a renowned hostess and guest, a leader in New Orleans society, and always regarded as having the best behaved...slaves. Often there were screams and shouts coming from somewhere deep inside Le Manse de Lalaurie, but no one dared suspect what was happening inside. As a Lalaurie cousin was arriving for a grand party, a slave girl fell to her death on the cobblestones before him. Hovering above him in a high window, holding a bullwhip was the flushed and furious face of Madame Lalaurie.
One evening, a fire started in the Lalaurie home which revealed a horrific scene: slaves had been chained up in the attic and tortured in the worst ways--the Lalaurie's had broken every bone and joint in one poor soul's body, resetting them at horrific angles to resemble a crab. Another had been partially skinned. A third, driven to complete insanity by her captors, broke free from her rescuers and threw herself through a window to her death. The crimes and tortures the Lalaurie's had committed on their slaves were so vile that everyone in the city joined in the manhunt for these demons.
But in the confusion, Doctor & Madame Lalaurie had literally vanished into the night and were never to be seen again.
It is believed by those who were there or whose parents were there when it happened that the Lalaurie's and their ungodly acts are too evil to die or be forgotten. The house still stands vacant to this very day, unwilling to allow anyone or anything to survive in the space. Even now, late at night when that part of the Quarter falls still, the screams still echo through the vast emptiness inside the Lalaurie House.

It's scary because it is all true!
