If you are not committed to quitting then it won't work. You have to make the decision to stop, and mean it. Write down the reasons that you want to quit. All of them. Post them on the fridge with the kids pictures.
I would not suggest the "Air" cigarettes because you are ot breaking the habit part of this. Use a patch or gum, wean yourself off of those as you are able. You will find the desire to go through the actions of smoking are very, very strong and probably the hardest thing to change in the beginning. So give yourself time to get beyond that phase using a nicotine delivery system that will keep you satisfied physically while you work on the emotional and mental parts of it.
I used both gum and patch. I prefered the gum because it allowed me to "do" something. Since actually getting a smoke out, lighting it and having to go through all of the stages was an involved process I opted for another 'process' to fill in.
Then I eventually switched to regular gum. It worked. But now I carry gum like I used to carry cigs! It is cheaper, smells a lot better, doesn't make me cough, I can chew gum in a movie theater and can go places and do things that I couldn't before because of the smokes.
I quit several times, but each try was more difficult than the ones before. So if you make the attempt to stop, try to make it work that time. If you fail, then try again. Don't stop trying. It is worth the effort. I promise.

I know someone who quit smoking. Some people say the gum/patch works for them. Some do smoking sensation classes and I know a person who quit smoking due to hypnotism.
My dad said the best way he quit was cold turkey. He had a heart attack and it was a real wake up call, but he says considering the other methods he tried, cold turkey worked the best and the cravings on occasion are still there like after dinner, but its become less intense as time went on.

first of all, dont use the gum
the companies packs that s.hit with nicotine (what you are addicted to in ciggs) and it'll ween you off the ciggs but you'll be addicted to the gum and if you dont already know, the gum costs ALOT more than ciggs. its just a way for tobacco companies to benefit even more. it's not any healier; it's just not ciggs.
ive seen this happen to at least a couple dozen people.
what you need to know is that a lot is going to change by choosing to quit. you're going to be very irritable and most people that quit smoking end up gaining weight because eating becomes their new habit. most people quit best by just slowing down. limit yourself to a certian number of ciggs each day, because most peoples bodies go whack if you just cut off the nicotine cold turkey.
good luck
i need to quit too : /

Yes I have tried so many times in the past 9 years and every attempt has been a failure. I've even gone to the extent of hynosis, taking wellbutrin trying those hard candy thingys everything and I'm still smoking. I'm the same way I know I should quit but another part of me says no you can't you need them, it's called a nasty addiction, never been addicted to drugs, but I feel like a crack addict. I'm going to try again actually I have set my quit date for July 1st, lets see how it goes, considering my chest hurts like hell everyday I hope I can do it.
