I just moved in with my boyfriend and I have a past due electric bill that I have every intention on paying, but I'm having some serious financial problems right now. Anyway, the utility company sent me a letter today stating that if I do not pay the amount in full by Monday that they will shut off his utilities which are in HIS name and not mine. Can they do that? We are not married and do not have any children together, I have one from a previous marriage.

They are wanting to shut off my boyfriends utilities where I just moved in to. The past due bills are in my name but where I live now the bills are in my boyfriends name, should he be responsible?

I do not think they can do that. Get in touch with your local ABA and find some free legal advice on this subject.

He needs to get on the phone with the utility company and explain that you just moved in and that you are not the primary resident, he is. They can't cut his service off just because a previous non-paying customer moved into the same house, I think.

Best wishes and God bless.

I think it depends upon what state you live in. How did the utility company get your new address? Are you SURE that the utility bill is in your boyfriend's name only?

once you do not pay your utilities on time, the most which will ensue is she will be able to save receiving telephone calls or threats of them shutting off her service. in case you or her do no longer call the application company and make price arrangements and stick with them, they are going to pop out and close off her service. that is going to then value her a strong chew of money to get them grew to change into back on ( i comprehend the water right here's like $ninety 8 to get it grew to change into back on an same day if you're making the awesome price! ) and the application may even require that the antisocial account holder positioned down a deposit. (deposits are many times $100 or extra!) Now, if her utilities get close off and he or she can not get the money jointly to positioned them back on, they are going to flow to a set company in some unspecified time sooner or later. many times in about 3 to 4 mos. in the adventure that they are offered to a set company that is going to flow on your credit rfile. late application costs that do receives a fee earlier service is close off do no longer impact your credit as far as your credit rfile, yet, do impact your status with the application company. As I pronounced, save up the late funds, or being close off and the application company will absolutely verify a deposit charge on your account. also, if she is renting this position, each and every time the guy comes out and really shuts off the application, the owner or whomever owns the valuables receives be conscious the application became close off. this can get her in warm water such as her landlord!

they cannot turn off his power unless he has a deliquent account with them. I was going through the same thing, and no they cant, it wouldnt make sense, and its probably illegal. what you would need to do is ask to talk to their manager when you call and see whats going on and if you can make arranged payments. I just had to send a doctors note to my power company because they threatend to shut my power off that my ex helped run up just a couple months ago. so do all that you can to square away this problem because you are going to eventually want the power in your name sometime or another.

if they're in his name then he is responsible for sorting it out, not you, he will be held liable if they don't get paid. If you mean the bill is in you current boyfriends name, just let them cut it off and then get it reconnected in your name, he will have a specific amount of time to pay, you will just need to make sure that he isn't on any verification needed to apply for connection.

Regardless of their bully tactics, your boyfriend cannot be made responsible for your bills, unless he guaranteed your account.
