I don't think they are afraid of gays. I think they disapprove of gays (because they're narrow-minded, or too influenced by religions) and they are afraid of becoming one, or of feeling identified in some things with gays. So, they're not afraid of you. They're afraid of being like you.

They are afraid because it's all psychologic. They might feel as if they "hang out" with a homosexual, they wil start thinking like them and it might change their sexuality. Those who are strong enough to know and they are straight and can't be changed won't have a problem with gays. However, those who are scared of converting to the gay livestyle are homophobic and don't to come near a gay. Good luck :)!
P.S: Gay guys are like the coolest friends! They are also gifted with cutting hair :)! And designing beatiful stuff! Some of the greatest men were gay like Shakespeare and Leonardo Da Vinci! Even Ceaser!

They are afraid of you, because apart of them identifies with you. Most homophobics have had one consentual or non consentual sexual experience with the same sex. They are afraid that they might enjoy your lifestyle, so they oppose themselves by opposing you.
There is no such thing as a pedafile-phobic or even a beastiality-phobic. Because people who don't do such things don't think about them, nor do they have the energy to FEAR them....

Ok. This is what I came up with last week.
This is kind of tough to explain but stick with me:
First off: straight women are usually more accepting of gay men and gay women.
Straight men in our culture are not penalized for not taking care of themselves as they get older. - But to a greater degree, straight women are expected to remain beautiful.
Gay men as a general rule take care of themselves as they get older and judge other men gay and straight by some standard of beauty or attractiveness quotient.
My current theory is that it scares the crap out of straight men to have to give a thought to their looks and appearance. When they sense a gay man might be assessing their attractiveness they freak out because they don't like to go there and society doesn't encourage them to do so.
But that doesn't mean that straight guys don't appreciate another guy's beauty because they definitely do. They'll just find some incredible defense to avoid admitting it.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it at least for a few more days. But it definitely leads me to a question to follow yours.
Thanks.

In general terms homophobics afraid that interacting with homosexuals will make them one as well. A phobia (fear) doesn't always have to be a rational fear and it ussualy isn't.

More likely, homophobics are afraid of BEING gay, and they are so socially retarded that they can't even explore their own feelings.
