point setting is done by using a dwell meter,,this sets the points exactly the the angle of the cam,,and the setting is 28-32,,30 being the desired setting,,this is exactly what GM say,s to set them at,,also they will last a long time when set to this setting,,if your going to try and gap them,,using a gage,,set them to 17 thousand,,on a feeler gage,,but this is only a temporary setting ,,get them dwell ed as soon as possible,,because the will burn at 17,,if ran there too long,,i do this for a living,,hope this help,s you.

You need to get a Repair Manual. IF, I remember correct it .035 and may have a label somewhere under hood to tell. BUT, you see that little Trap Door on the Distributor Cap. IF, you want to Fine Tune it you need a Dwell Meter and Allen Wrench and you get that thing Perfect. Also, I Time it and Readjust the Points until it real good. Just been a long time I done one of these. Manual really be worth the money, $15 +/- at Auto-Zone.

If it were me I would change the points to an optical ignition. Such as a Pertronics Ignitor. It fits under the cap, and eliminates the points, so they never have to be gapped, the never pit or burn. It's your best way. You can get them from most mail order parts stores.
