Because we are rich. If you're talking about game systems, then we do not get it first. Japan does.

Many Americans, especially young ones who can't write in English, have no clue about how well-off they are.

We get a lot because we have a lot of natural resources, making us a wealthy country. One of the resources we're quickly running out of is young people educated in the sciences, mathematics, engineering and all those things that have traditionally kept us wealthy.

India and China are nipping at our heels, and unless those young people learn to read and write, we won't get "everything first" for long.

But whoever overtakes us is probably no more likely to feed the hungry of the world, or provide vaccine to stop measles (which most of those young people have probably never even seen) from killing nearly a million people a year. (To say nothing of all the other diseases that are killing children all over the world, but which are completely preventable.)

I just don't think a human society is capable of seeing itself as a world citizen. Not in a deep way. It hasn't happened yet, no matter who the world powers of the moment were. Even if some great power of the day *could* solve the world's problems, it's probable that the rest of the world would hate them for it.

It's how we're made. All of us.

Do you mean good things or bad things like STDs, blame, social unrest?

On the whole I think it balances out. Besides I'd have to agree with SALAO sometimes having things first is a pain. I prefer second, when the bugs have been sorted out. And I'm refering to the good things here. Give me a secondhand STD, or pass me the blame, and I will be very unhappy with you.

Why is it that so many Americans, seemingly ignorant to the rest of the world and its ways, ALWAYS assume they are number 1?

Come on get a grip.
