Engines are basically air pumps, with fuel added.
The more air they can pump, inhale and exhale if you will
the more power they make. Most 4 cylinder engines are actually in line, not a V4. This means 4 cylinders in a row. Where as a V6, has 3 cylinders on either side, with a common crankshaft at the bottom, it forms a V. Simple but 4 cylinders take in less air then 6. And because the V6 has 3 cylinders on either side, it is more balanced and smooth. A 4 cylinder has to run at a higher speed to attain the same power as the larger V6. Although more
fuel efficient then the V6, 4 cylinders tend to be noisier and vibrate
more then the larger V6. Another thing to consider is torque.
Torque moves mass ( weight) When comparing engines, that is just as important as comparing horsepower.
Now, onto lesson #2, when god created the V8 engine !!!

A v6 is six cylinders arranged in two rows of three at a 45 or 30 degree angle.
A traditional inline 4 cylinder engine is four cylinders in a line.
A v4 or flat 4 is horizontally opposed, meaing the 4 cylinders are in two rows of two split 180 degrees apart. This is also called a boxer motor. Subaru is known for these motors.
And you guys are ALL WRONG! Saab made a 1.something litre V4 engine in that goofy looking roadster. I beleive it was an industrial engine first.

well first of all there is no such thing as a "V4" it's actually an inline 4 cylinder and a V6 but there are also inline 6 cylinder as well as flat 6's and so on...The V formation places the intake valves on one side of the V and the exhaust on the other. In most cases the V formation creates more power and in some cases more efficient. Although I truly believe the V formation is popular because of its ease to work on.

there is no such thing as a v4 there is only a inline 4 cylinder, that means the pistons( cylinders) are in a streight line. this type of engine gets better gas milage, fewer repairs and cheaper to mantain. the v6 has more horsepower less gas milage and is more costly to fix and mantain. if your looking to buy get a toyota with a inline 4 or a honda these are the most reliable and the best for gas milage. they might cost more to buy at first but u save later.

A v6 is going to have more horsepower and use more gas. And a 4-cylinder is going to be much better on gas, but sounds like a hamster running around on it's little wheel. They are building them better so for gas sake go for the 4-cylinder. Hope this helps.

2 cylinders. Never apologize for asking a question. You will get more horse power with a V6 but a little less gas mileage. My 98 V6 Camero got 22 mpg.

power to pass inthe six theres more horse power to go up steep hills and the car can carry a heavier load and not dog out but most 4's have high compression and also some have more valves in the cylinders and that adds compression and power to the engine

4 cyl has better gas mileage but the 6 cyl has more power. And they arent v4. they are just 4cyl. the v means they are in the shape of a v. 6 cyl can be a v or an in line straight.

heres what you need to know.
4 cyl engines are weaker, but in small cars, get better gas milage. they get around good in town, but forget about passing that slow truck on the highway, after about 55mph, the car just wont have the balls to speed you up.
now, a V6 takes up about the same amount of space, but the touque (how hard the engine pushes) is much higher. that means on the highway, you can cruse at about 85 and still get 20mpg no problem. in town, as long as your not a leadfoot, you wont notice much of a difference in gas milage.

the difference between the two is clearly two pistons but there is no such thing as a v 4 there is however an inline four the other diferences are the inline four usualy has les horse power than the six but beter gas mileage
