I've been playing PC games since I built my first computer in 1994. Over the years I have used probably an equal number of nVidia and ATi video cards. Currently I'm on an ATi kick because I've had better luck with motherboard compatibility from their cards, but its strictly a matter of preference right now. Next year, I could very well return to the nVidia team. I can tell you that both companies make a wide range of video cards in both their levels of performance and in benchmark tests. For every level of performance that one company has, the other answers with a card that is near identical.
When two of these near identical cards are tested, one card may perform better on a particular game by a whopping 2 or 3 frames per second. This is not a noticeable difference when the framerate is above 40 per second. An nVidia card may perform slightly better on one game when compared to it's ATi equivilent, but compare the two cards on another game and the ATi will have a slight edge over the nVidia.
Its all about marketing and brand loyalty when someone gives an opinion of nVidia is better than ATi or vice versa. What IS more important to look at is the manufacturer of the nVidia or ATi card. As an example, you might look on newegg.com and see that there are quite a few companies making the GeForce 6600GT: Aopen, Leadtek, Gigabyte, Chaintech, Jaton, Albatron, Biostar, ProLink, Apollo, eVGA... you get the idea. Although they all use the nVidia licensed 6600GT video chipset and meet it's architectural requirements, the cards are not equal. Some use 800mHz GDDR2 video memory while others are using 1000mHz GDDR3 video memory. So we could probably find more similar performace when comparing a Geforce 6600GT and an ATi Radeon X700 Pro than we could with two different manufacturer's GeForce 6600GTs. A little research will help you weed out the less desirable versions of whichever card you're in the market for.
Some people will tell you that the CPU you use (Intel or AMD) is a factor as to which brand video card you should get. Or you might hear that the motherboard's BIOS makes a difference... Like if you run a motherboard with an nForce (nVidia made) chipset, that you should go with an nVidia card. Both of the above are false, I've tested them and seen these beliefs disproven.
In short, your main concerns when deciding on a video card are your price range, the type of video card interface in your computer (PCI, AGP or PCI-x) and your game requirements. Just get the most card you can afford and you'll be happy.

I prefer Radeon cards. One of the reasons is that ATI radeon cards generally work better for games that run on the source engine, like Half life 2, counterstrike, and day of defeat. And, since those are my favorite games, it only makes sense to have an ATI radeon card.
EDIT: The person below stated that Geforce cards have sharper graphics, and that is false. Geforce cards do not provide sharper graphics. Accually, ATI radeon cards tend to work better with AA on, then Nvidia cards (AA makes for sharper graphics).

it's a preference thing. i prefer radeon. but they are both good. as far as which has the best card, that changes about every month. it's a never ending battle. either way a good mainstream card from either brand. (about 200-250 dollars) will play any game you throw at it. before you spend more on a card, remember today's top performer is just another card in 6 months. geforce is the way to go, if you want to go with dual cards in the future though. the sli motherboards rock!

if nvidia has the best tachnology in graphics of today, ati radeon has the advance technology of tomorrow, which enhances clearly your videos and games even if you don't have to update its drivers unlike nvidia which heavily rely on updates on its graphics and thats their downside ati radeon only has one download its the catalyst which is only one program that updates all you video performance at ati.com

Better is all a matter of opinion in most cases.
That being said, my opinion is that I prefer ATI.
