I had stress fractures last xc season, and now I am back running. =)! I have to run 23 miles this week, and 30 next week. On days where I need to run 6 miles, is it better to run 3 miles in the morning and 3 again at night? Or is it better to do it all at once?

This is my question: Which is better for my bones? I don't want to get injured again!

Please state your source, and please don't answer if you have never ran before!!!!!

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ANSWERING: Completed 5 marathons,1 35 mile race, 4 half marathons, more 5k's than you are old.

If you are training for anything longer than 10k's you should probably go for the endurance run. But if you are training for shorter races, you really won;t lose anything by splitting it up. I have had to do that many times while marathon training to accommodate working full time and getting the mileage in.

Just remember for 3 weeks of increasing your mileage, you need to do a back up week to allow your body catch up time to heal. If you are really honest with yourself, stress fractures do not happen instantaneously. It is repeated punishment that is ignored or Advil-led away under the body finally breaks down.

If you split up the runs, do not expect the later one to be a high quality intense workout. it was always a more relaxed pace for me....good luck this season!!

what kind of events are you training for?
if you're training for shorter runs like 2 miles or less, then breaking it up into 3 and 3 shouldnt matter. But if you are training for distance runs you really need to build up your endurance and you just cant do that with only 3 mile runs.
Your bones wont really care if you run 6 all at once or 3 and 3, they still get the same stress. If you are worried about another stress fracture you could try cross training on something less stressful like biking or swimming.
loveher is right, shoes are a big part of stress fractures. if you havent had a professional look at your stride and shoes, you should.

I think that running it seperate is easier on the bones, because you have the stress put on them for less time, but not by much. But, I think that running six miles at one time would be much better than running it seperate for improving times and such. You have to be the one to draw the line of sacrificing better performance to maybe help you not get injured again.

I always run my six miles all at once. I personally think that it causes less stress and it's nice to just get it over with. But what's best for you can only really be answered by your personal experience.

i've run three Chicago Marathons...you are on a program from your coach to build endurance...running three in the morning and three at night is not building the endurance that running all six in one run is building...get to a sports orthopedist or sports podiatrist and get their opinion on this as it relates to your stress fractures...ALSO...get to a running specialty store and have them get you in the proper shoes given your stress fracture history...this is CRUCIAL!! Good luck!!

i would run it all at once, because it is less strain on the body, and u get it all done at once.
