My son has gone to extreme lengths to gain access to internet games. Not the bloody, gorey, stuff. Just strategy games. My husband and I are computer geeks, so our son doesn't get away with anything for long, but he has become quite creative. Let's just say that when he was 13, he hacked our computer. Broke in through start up and wiped out the login password in the bios. We didn't even know he knew how to get there. He had been online for two days and was on the top 20 high score 13 times. He's a genius...but he's making me nuts. We have refocused his computer energy to other things...but keeps going back for the games.

How about teaching him to create games?
Would he be interested in not only creating his own versions and plays of strategy games, but creating some from start?
That would get him involved in something other than playing them, and might very well be building up for a great future.
Yeah, he'd still be on the computer a lot ... but also be learning some new things.
Just a thought.

Your son has problems. Just to tell you, it is very easy to hack XP, start it up in safe mode, delete the administrator and make a new one. Parental controls are hackable with little effort, like the letter "P" if you knnow what im talking about. If you use IE put that gaming site opn the blocked list and have like you and your husbands social security #'s and then the phone number to the local computer store. He is addicted to the internet by the way.

Yes, it's a very serious thing. My wife and I have a tendency to spend too much time at the computer. But we try to hold it in check. Web-surfing can really eat up the hours in your day. I know. You just have to walk away and do some other things. Since we have yahoo mail accounts, it's easy to check email anywhere and at anytime. This is not a good thing. We think it is, but in the long run we end up over-checking the email. I even keep my calendar at yahoo. Well, good luck with your son.

I understand he likes strategy games so try getting him to try Sudoku. You should moniter his computer time and only let him play for at least an hour or so a day. Try and get him interested in other things or doing things with the family. If this doesn't work then try another answer. I hope this helps.

There are online tests one can take to determine if one has internet addiction. Their predictive value may not be exceptional due to internet research being relatively new to psychology. A major sign of internet addiction though is if you wake up in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom and then check your e-mail. A good rule of thumb is if it is impacting school work and social performance. Have him take the tests even if they may not be perfect.

Refocusing the energy is key, keep him mentally challenged in other ways. How about keep him gaming on a timer or making him keep note of how many hours he's been playing?
