The darkening of the silver is simple oxidation and it's most likely caused by either acidy or salty foods left on them for long periods of time. I think even excessive dust can initiate oxidation, but very slowly.

Just the oxygen in the air. Try a silver cleaner then a polish. Most any place sells it.

Oxidation - commonly called tarnish. There are many easy ways to clean it off, just do a quick internet search.

Toothpaste (with fluoride) can get them off.
