I want to speed up my computer. I have plenty of memory and cable broadband. What is enough protection for surfing the net? Can I just set Windows and toolbars.

NO NO NO! even if you have security (anti-virus) still there is threat... yes! some are undetectable... because their binary code is compressed which cannot be scanned by AV... so i think you got it.... having Av too has minimum threats... without Av... MAXIMUM RISK!

you could proceed to exist for like perhaps 2 weeks without McAfee or norton and thats it ur laptop is out the window. Get McAfee i say terrific bargains I extremely have have been given and quite speedy on the viruses (Virus test maximum serious observed via Firewall) even however XP has a firewall its no longer the terrific yet does block out a small volume that can annoy i assume. !

Yahoo Toolbar has an anti-spy. It gives zero protection againest viruses.

free things are free for a reason....if you want true protection , get something like Nortan , Macafee , or TrendMicro PcCillin. I'm pretty sure those come with a fire wall , and anti-spyware scanners also , so you'll be all set.

ya win xp has a firewall and yahoo toolbar has an anti-spyware

Absolutely NOT...you have to have a good Stand Alone Antivirus,,
Firewall, and Antispyware installed or you're asking for it!!!

Muff is right you need something more i recommend firefox web browser adaware and or spyware Dr. and AVG anti virus

You HAVE to have an antivirus program! AVG or Avast are both FREE!
