it says on the box 16x16 maxium dvd writing speed and it says 8x dual/double layer 16x dvd-r dvd+r 40x cd-r
32x cd-rw 6x dvd-rw 8x dcd+rw.

it sure is the same thing. it reads cd at 40x speed. It writes to CD-R at 40x speed. it re-writes to CD-RW at 32x speed, it writes to dvd+/-r at 16x, rewrites dvd+rw at 8x.
