Here is the problem.

Astro Van, 95, 4.3L, 224,000 miles. Original engine, transmission, timing chain, etc.

Engine chokes, stalls, sputters, and vibrates when the accelerator is pressed fully while in drive. When in neutral and fully depressing the trottle the engine does not sputter or run rough. It stalls in all this in all speeds D, 3, 2, 1. Simply pressing rapidly the accelerator will do every time.

If you barely or gently press the accelerator it will attain a good speed and hold it. Seems to run normal as long as acclerator is not pressed over 1/4 of stroke.

Fuel pump was changed at 180,000.
Ox Sensor at 205,000.

No codes showing, no check engine light.

Seems to me like if it were the fuel pump or the coil it would do it in neutral as well.

ANYBODY got a clue what this beast is telling me.

the timing chain is bad,,your engine is not advancing the timing,,because it can,t determine at which point to advance it to,,if you,ll pull the chain out you,ll see what im talking about,,there will be a lot of slack in it,,the symptom,s you described are al relevant to the timing chain,,don't waste a lot of money on it until you at least check it out,,I'm sure your gonna look at it,,and wonder how it has ran this long,,i do this all the time,,hope this help,s you.

Thats a tough problem. I'd start by pulling a spark plug. If its white, theres a fuel issue. 4.3 vortec motors have a big injector inside the intake plenum with 6 hoses going to each throttle port. an injector pulse pressurizes the system and individual check valves distribute fuel to whichever port is intaking. This part can go bad.

Disconnecting the egr system to see if it smoothes out wouldnt be a bad test.

Other than that a misfire may be present, check for arcing along the cap and wires with a fine mist of water and light engine load. Also fuel pressure.

Check the torque converter, It can cause the engine to stall in all gears, and to vibrate when you hit the gas. and wont cause a engine light to come on...

My first thought is the automatic transmission is slipping. Your van has had a very useful life and I bet the transmission is getting sick.

I have seen this before. It was the EGR Valve. This one has an electronic valve (acutely three solenoids). Replace it and it should solve your problem..
