It is possible -- I have one.

Most top business schools offer a PhD in Business Administration -- allowing you to concentrate in one of the following fields (not all schools offer all topics):

1. Finance
2. Marketing
3. Accounting
4. Organizational Behavior
5. Strategy
6. Operations Research
7. Business & Public Policy
8. Real Estate

Each department admits their own students -- so Marketing students have a different background and different classes than Finance students.

The top schools are extremely selective -- and most of the students accepted usually have other graduate degrees. Since the MBA degree is a practical degree, it is pretty rare for PhD students in most of these areas to have one (though I did). Many of the OB and Strategy students do -- but very few finance students.

To give you an idea of the qualifications needed -- the year that I was accepted for a PhD in Finance at Berkeley there were close to 300 applications. Nine students were accepted and six chose Berkeley (two of the others went to Chicago and one to MIT).

Of the six who got accepted, here are our backgrounds:

1. I had done graduate work in Mathematics and Philosophy and had an MBA from Duke where I took PhD level finance and economics classes.

2. One student had a PhD in physics from Brown and had worked in finance for McKinsey

3. One had a PhD in Mathematics from Wisconsin

4. One was at the dissertation stage for a PhD in Operations Research at USC.

5. One was at the dissertation stage for a PhD in Statistics from U of Paris, had a master's degree in Economics, had taught MBA classes in France for four years and had several publications.

6. One had a degree in Mathematical Finance from U of chicago.

The backgrounds of the students in the other disciplines were just as impressive. One Business & Public Policy student had a MA in Geography, a MBA and a JD.

The PhD itself took me four years to complete. Two were spent taking classes and two were spent writing my dissertation. Of course, this doesn't count the coursework I had done elsewhere.

well the only phd you can get concerning business is a phd in economics, which is mainly just economic theorey and is not a very popular choice for business executive wannabe's . Often the best choice is to get an mba, or a Masters of Business Admin, you must get a Bachelors of Business Admin or Commerce before you can apply for your masters, and the most presteges of all is the Executive Masters of Bus Admin.

Yes, there are doctoral programs in business. It's generally a three to five year program after your bachelor's degree.

Best wishes and God bless.
