well i have a red male beta fish and one day my sister told me that the fish was on its side and we all thought that it was dead. butt it wasnt, all we did was change its water and he got a little better but he still didnt swim much and wouldnt swim to the bottom of the tank. then the next day i found the water was a little orange color in the light. and i saw some of my fishes shredded fin on the bottom of the tank. this happened a while ago but now he is normal like nothing has happened to him. is this normal? has something strange and unusual happened to my fish? any answers to these questions would be great!

Yup, it's fin rot. My fish had this a little over a year ago and successfully recovered in about two weeks. You need to go to the pet store and buy the liquid medicine that they sell for general fish diseases. Fin rot should be listed on the label. Make sure that when you do his partial water changes you're using water that's had a chance for the ph to balance. It's good that your fish is back to normal, but you should still try to treat him at least for a week so that he doesn't get an infection or have his condition come back. My beta often will lay at the bottom of his bowl and play dead. He always perks up when it's feeding time or when my female beta swims to the side of her bowl where he can see her. I think as long as he is active at some point, he's fine.

All fish do better in a tank of a decent size with a filtering system. Lot less work for you in the long run too! No changing the water! (part of water, never all of it) There are lots of diseases fish can get! Could be some kind of rot or fungus. Their air bladder can get messed up too, that would keep him from being able to go down in the water etc. Hopefully you have plants and/or decorations in the tank so he can hide and not get too stressed out. Some diseases are actually from stress and others are from dirty water, etc.! Fish don't need the light, and would do better without it! Hope he is ok!

Your fish has fin rot. It happens when the ph balance in the tank is not normal, and the water eats away at the fin. It also effects their ability to swim normally. There are drop you can buy at a pet store to correct the water, if it isn't too late. If you have any real shells or coral in the tank, take them out, it makes it worse.
Hope that helps.

sounds to me that his water got stale and dirty. Betta are great for poor water conditions but it still gets them. I figure some fin rot due to the stagnant water. The water change brought him right around it seems. Change a 30% of his water weekly. Wash the gravel in the bottom and keep half the water back and replace half monthly. I take it he is just in a bowl. Did you use well water it will leave a orange tint if it has a bit of iron for a day or so.

Most important how old is your fish. The average betta lives about 3 to 4 years. If your fish is older than that he may just be showing signs of a old man (you know losing hair and falling asleep anywhere). If he is younger he may be stressed. I would try moving him to a different area and see how he reacts. My betta (Max) was fine in my bedroom for a few months then he seemed to start mopping around his little tank (btw which sounds like your tank) so I moved him to the bathroom and he loves it. He perked back up to his old self and he loves when I run the water in the sink!

Is your betta in a fish bowl or aquarium? Aquarium is better. Where do you have him located? Your fish might have a disease or some, so i would contact a vet that specifies in fish.
