the buddha reached enlightenment through meditation. He found his original path of decadence didn't fulfill him spiritually and wouldn't lead to enlightenment so he switched to the opposite path of ascetiscism. When he found that path was not working well either he decided the middle path was best for him and he sat under a bodi tree in quiet meditation. During this time he was attacked and tempted by various evil beings not wanting him to gain his enlightenment but he held strong and eventually, through his meditative powers became enlightened.

its not about what he did sitting under a tree or not its what he relized he spent along time seeking awnsers and then it made sense to him he understood that he himself can never know more then 1% of the universe but that he can be in control of his 1% by not succumbing to desire or the want of material things like power so he leared to accept all the universe at what its then he was still not concidered too have reached true enlightenment until he died that is when he was able to understand all things which we are unable to due while in the physicle form but we can come really close by learing self disipline mentaly and physicle not by sitting under a tree its by learing the teachings of the dharma which translates to THE teachiongs or basicly they truth.

Meditating under a tree on the suffering of humanity. A lot.
A buddha is anybody who reaches nirvana, and breakes the cycle of "reincarnation". When people like quote "Buddha" they are usually refering to this half mythical guy, Gautama Siddhartha.
The wiki on him:

After trying a bunch of different things, I think he sat under a tree for a really long time, with minimal sustenance, like 20 years or longer.

he did all sorts of things to himself to really know pain and torture, since he was a prince before, like plucking out his whole beard...
I don't actually believe in Budda but that's how the story goes
