and, in hindsight, should've been allowed to secede from the Union? I mean come on, really. The South used to be purely Democrat, remember the "Southern Democrat"? But ever since blacks gained the right to vote (w/o poll taxes), the Dixiecrats suddenly became conservative Republican because Dems wanted civil rights for blacks. You have states like Texas that allowed itself to be Gerrymandered beyond recognition and Tennessee who still celebrate the Scopes Monkey trial victory. If in November and in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita, there are not more Democratic senators, governors, and congressmen from the South, I propose we just cut them loose. MS and LA are STILL in shambles but yet there is a Republican in office?! Where's the love? The fact is is that they will elect Reps b/c all the whites (who vote rep) had enough money and means to escape and rebuild later than 90% of all the blacks (who vote dem) who stayed and suffered.

Oh Southerners, save your responses. I am talking to places like California, Michigan, New York, chicago, Seattle, Las Vegas...you know, where all the people live. The fact is is that the South makes up a huge land mass with few people whereas those other places plus a few more, make up a very small land mass with most of the people in the country. And everyone else save your firey comments about patriotism. I would love to keep the south, but they have the religious right and backwards, mostly ignorant views about EVERYTHING that those of us who live in cities have informed views on (for the most part). I am from Mississippi, I am not some hater from the big city who is talking about a place he hasn't experienced first hand in real life. I just feel that the south walks to its own drummer and is out of synch with the rest of us.

No. Abe Lincoln goofed big time. I can't believe some consider him a great president. He should have sought compromises with the South. Sure the South was making a fortune on cotton trading to Europe, thus making the South wealthy, yet Lincoln was stubborned and ended getting us involved in a civil war, that should never have happened.
Yet, I agree with you about the lack of Democrats in the south. Once a bastion of democratic thought, now it's all Republicans. What a catastrophe for the Democratic party. It seems the only Democratic president that has a chance of getting elected has to be from the south like Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton.
As far as the race issue, it's a problem. Yet it could have been straighten out during Lincoln's time by requiring the southern plantation owners to pay for labor and to abolish slavery. That problem should have been worked on long ago instead of getting into a civil war. Nevertheless, the fact that the South was making all that money on cotton was a reason most forget that lead to a civil war.
Anyway, things could change. The south could return to its democratic tendencies. At least I hope so for the sake of this country. By the way, I'm not from the south, I'm from a burb of NYC.

Quick, you need to drive probably to Arizona, over in the Mojave Desert. When you get here be sure to cry me a river.
The Democrats have lost the south because they are changing to a socialist progressive party. The Democrats today are shoving out members who are for more traditional stances for the fringe groups, the ones who 20 years ago no one would want to associate with. They have lost touch with what the average American wants. 40% of Hispanics already vote Republican, I am seeing more and more blacks voting Republican, I know a gay guy who votes Republican because he says what the Democrats stand for is worse than what the Republicans do.
The Democrats are losing their base and don't care, I mean come on! Howard Dean put backing behind the white candidate in the NO race against Nagin then talks about how he is for affirmative action? The Democrats will not get either the house or senate in '06, nor the Presidency in '08. They are ignoring a large area of the country and now it has cost them, and they can't even realize why they are losing.

Of course you know that all the local politicians are Dems and liberal, Birmingham is 60% Black and everyone seems to get along well(except for the high murder rate). It's a poor state, and despite that people try to do the best they can. They elect republicans because they are scared that the Dems will take God out of there lives.
I'm a liberal Dem, but these are real fears these people have. There not stupid or easy to fool they just like what they have as far as social identity, and with booth Black and White voters your
opinion means nothing, try harder maybe you can start a fight.
Are you sure Texas is part of the South, like MS,AL and LA

I love it when narrow minded persons think that the United States would be better off with out a part of it all parts of our country makes a unique entity with other countries. Now if people feel the south is not worthy of being part of our nation, why don't we look at some other parts of the country that should be removed from our union, like the north west all they offer is lumber or is this a little narrow minded, how about the Mississippi river valley what have they given to keep America strong, I mean to say we need to be respectful of all parts of our country because United we stand ,divided we fall words sound familiar.

Take the e book for evaluation... flow by the e book quite a few circumstances..... until eventually, The e book is going by YOU ! Then, merely describe what the e book will do to a trustworthy student. that is going to change into an lovable evaluation. social gathering: even as the excellent Abraham Lincoln gave a speech to commemorate the courageous soldier's sacrifice, he pronounced that what's being pronounced will be forgotten, yet what the squaddies did will be ever remembered. yet all of us comprehend it surpassed off any opposite direction ! that type of involvement & intensity would help !! brilliant desires.

Uhhhhh.... did it escape your attention that both the governor and mayor of New Orleans are DEMOCRATS? Do you think either one of them acted responsibly during Katrina?
What is it about the liberal mind that allows it such monumental blindness?
Does it also escape your attention that many prominent Republicans are black, such as Colin Powell and Condaleeza Rice?
President Bush must be the most color blind, non-sexist, liberal minded President in history. Both the departments of commerce and justice are headed by Hispanics. Our Secretary of State and the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development are both black. The departments of labor and education are both headed by women.
And let's talk about personal responsibility. I would estimate that 90% of the people who stayed in New Orleans did so out of their own volition. You can't tell me they couldn't scrape $20 together for a short bus ride out of town. You do realize that you only needed to travel a short distance out of the city, right?
A lot of them were just too lazy to get off their butts. They gambled and they lost.

We didn't kick their *** just so we could cut them loose. They're probably in shambles still because the government tends to prioritize the states that didn't try and leave the union so they'll get to those other states when they feel like it.
