Suppose you are collecting Uranium 238, because you want to build a better bomb. If you were stupid enough to pile it in one place, eventually you would have enough to start a self-sustaining reaction and it would melt down.

The amount required to maintain a self-sustaining reaction is called "critical mass".

Fission is when you split heavy atoms, uranium or plutonium, to make lighter atoms.

Fusion is when you combine very light atoms, deuterium I believe, to make something heaver, like helium. It takes a lot of evergy to get a fusion reaction going.

The critical mass of fissile material is the amount needed for a sustained nuclear chain reaction. The critical mass of a fissionable material depends upon its nuclear properties

When a nucleus fissions, it splits into several smaller fragments. These fragments, or fission products, are about equal to half the original mass. Two or three neutrons are also emitted.

In physics, nuclear fusion is the process by which multiple nuclei join together to form a heavier nucleus. It is accompanied by the release or absorption of energy depending on the masses of the nuclei involved.

Critical Mass-This is the amount of stuff REQUIRED for nuclear fission to occur.

Fission-This word describes the process where an unstable element is bombarded with neutrons. When a neutron joins with the element it splits that element and releases more neutrons. These neutrons then continue the Fission process. Energy is created in nuclear fission by the mass loss when the element splits.

Fusion-Fusion is when two elements are combined to formed a new element. In this process massive amounts of energy are released when the atoms fuse. The most common form of Fusion is found on our sun. Scientists have yet to create contained fusion.

Critical mass is the amount of closely assembled fissionable material it takes to start and sustain fission. this changes depending upon which variety of fissionable material collected , ie: uranium , plutonium etc.
