I'm studying belly dance as a performance. This is always a great theme for a party. There are various types of belly dancing & music - Turkish, Tribial Fusion, Mid-Eastern, Egyption etc. The music is always great and even if your not seriously preforming. The costume possiblities are endless. You could have some yummy international food(s) to go along with the theme.

From your name, cubangirl, I'd recommend that you have a party centered around the mystic and glamor of the old days in Havana. Picture the men in white dinner jackets and the ladies in sparkly gowns with flowing skirts.
With that idea in mind...you could print your invitation on thin paper and coil it around a cigar (Cuban would be the best). The guest would open the cigar and pull off the invitation. The aroma alone would inspire them to go to extremes in their costuming.
Hire local salsa or marimba band to entertain the group.
Have a dancing contest and award the winners a little trophy.
Have a costume contest for the most authentic costume.
Not only would your party be fun, it would be a great way to celebrate your culture.

50;s theme. or 70's theme. or Pick a T. V. series, or movie, Or a theme Let the Stars all Shine you could have look a like contest or who ever stands out the best you could have sparkling stars every where with pics of some top celebrities

Take a tip from the cult film of the same name...have a Vegas in Space party! Everybody has to come in stylized Vegas showgirl outfits and outrageous space costumes, regardless of gender! Have everybody adopt a Vegasian name like Vel Croford, or Alotta Space, or my personal favorite Olivia Neutron Bomb. If you can, have your more flamboyant and talented friends put on some kind of a show, just like Vegas...in space!

if i give you a good answer can i come LOL! well it depends on what you and your guests like...do a theme that they all can dress up to... i would do a white toga party myself because everyone has a white sheet, or i would do a mascarade theme that wouldbe lots of fun...

i remeber my daughter graudation was themed havana nights there was salsa music cuban decorations cuban food and the students dressed in cuban clothes
