Absolutely Do NOT try to remove it yourself!!! You must hire someone who is licensed for asbestos removal if you want to get rid of it. The best thing to do is just go ahead and put your carpet over it. Asbestos is not harmful unless it's airborne... for it to become airborne, someone or something has to break it up. Do not try to sand it, or pry it up. Leave it alone, and it won't bother you.

Provided the tiles are not damaged then you, your family and house guests will be OK without sealing the tile. If any of the tiles are damaged then it should be abated. If the tiles are damaged in the traffic areas they will surely become pulverized and this would introduce the fibers in the air. To my knowledge there is no sealant approved to encapsulate asbestos in floor tiles. The broken tiles along the baseboard due to the tack strip installation is not enough to cause any health concerns. More of a concern to me would be the 'off-gassing' from the new carpet.

It ain't worth the money you'll be charged for a contractor to remove it and to dispose of it. I would paint over it with a "sealer" type paint like Rustoleum Floor paint or I would put down a barrier of 2 or 3 layers of plastic sheets and then carpet over it. But for no reason disturb it or try to remove it yourself.

You don't have to seal it. Asbestos is only dangerous if airborne so don't sand it or mess with it. Just cover over it.

if left undisturbed, asbestos will not migrate. when it becomes airborne, you got big problems. if it makes you feel better, go to home depot and ask them to sell you an appropriate sealer.

Look in the phone book under environmental health or public health. They should be able to help you or direct you to someone that can.
