Lol!! It's not that Montrealers are bad drivers.. It's French people and people that live in Quebec. I live about an hour from the Quebec border, and when I head down that way I noticed the driving gets horrible. Montreal just seems so bad becuase its such a huge city thats majority French people.

Montrealers, the real ones that live near the core of the city, are not bad drivers.

Everebody else from Quebec are horrible urban drivers.

Why ?

Partly because in the winter you do not care for pedestrians and cyclist as there hardly any (except in Montreal), partly because most of the people in Quebec are not used to drive in dense urban areas and are very very stressed out, partly because the reputation of the city have an impact on how newcomers will drive, partly because we are french ******* and don't you dare to switch lanes in front of me!

Driving in Montreal is the quintessence of individuality. Nobody cares about anything but themselves and their little schedule. Road sings are merely suggestions. A bit like New York, but in New York, at least, they are used to dense urban areas and know where they are going.

I have my personnal theory about the city beign an island and everybody panicking not to get caught in the bridges' traffic (and they will be anyways). Also, most streets are not wide and are one way. People get affraid to lost their route. They are no predetermined routes to and out of downtown where you can't turn left or right (like in new york) so people cut into residential neighbourhoods, commercial streets etc... and mayhem ensues at rush hour.

Spend a year with your car in Montreal and you will most likely drive like a Montrealer. You have to be very conscious of your surroundings, never assume that the people in front of you will signal - or stop at red lights -, look look look and look, bikes will pass you on the right, pedestrians will jaywalk, old ladies will jump right in front of you, trucks will cut you off...

Go to Quebec city and you will instantly notice a difference from Montreal. Still, it is not Ontario or New Hampshire.
