Yep. What he said.
Replacing the hard drive is not all that difficult, but then you have a brand new (empty) disk drive, and you have to reload all your software.
There are companies that specialize in recovering files from broken disk drives, but it is very, very expensive.
Sorry to hear it happened to you.

Number one - don't tell us you are sharing your system CD!
Number two - Get that CD back at all cost and never let it out again.
Your error is a sad one. If you are lucky you may be able to recover you laptop with a "FIXMBR" command. But you need your System CD to do this. At worst, your hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced. You will need your System CD to format and reinstall everything on the new hard drive.
Number Three - There are drive enclosures that connect to the USB port but in most cases you will need to format the drive so it can be read or written to. Only if you are very lucky might you be able to access the dead drive and recover the data.

You will want to get your xp disk and try to repair files on the HDD. Do not hit the format option. Just try to repair. It will keep all your files and such while attempting to repair your possibly corrupt HDD. If that doesn't work, it looks like you will need to invest in a new hard drive. If your repair is successful, update your OS at microsoft.com.

if you get to a point where it asks you about reformating you mest up so restart. YOU DO NOT WANT TO REFORMAT YOU WILL LOOSE ALL YOUR DATA. by repairng windows xp you will keep all your apps and documents but you will looase sp2 and some drivers so do NOT go on the internet when it is done without running a windows update.

looks like you have a bad hard drive.. try removing it then booting, to see if you still get the message. if you get a DOS-like screen with a floppy drawing, then it's likely that you have a bad Hard drive but if you get the same screen, then I dunno what to say..
