because I could never diagram a sentance properly. English teachers may not answer this question. When was the last time you had to, in either work or personal settings, diagram a sentance or identify a verb and it's clauses or any if the parts of speech work they gave you in english class? And please not if you are helping your children with their homework, really, in your life have you used any of that claptrap?

Diagramming is for crap. However, parts of speech have been very much on my mind since HS; I'm a writer, and have been an editor many times in the past, for various magazines. So, yeah, I've used that part.

But diagramming is useless.

I've been working for 20 years and have never had to diagram a sentence. But I've had to write many memos and business plans, so good grammar is important.

Honestly speaking, yes I have. I write constantly. I make memo's for my Bosses, because they aren't so well with words. I write their speeches, and I do their presentations. I help my friends put together their reports, and I, myself, have been trying to write a book or two. If you do not plan on ever having to write important things, this will never be important. If you ever intend on being a writer, journalist, cartoonist, or ever have to present anything and send memos, you should really learn these things. Good luck.

I have never had to diagram a sentence. However once while was arguing grammar in the back of a bus with my friends, it came up and I didn't know what a present participle was. They won that one.

Teachers don't know everything. I didn't do well in algebra geometry in school. I couldn't relate to it. When I got older I fell in love with 3D animation and learn about it in a practical way. Now I Love that Cartesian plane and the xyz's!

I have to say that MOST of the stuff we learn in school is useless to us as adults! Maybe it's just a way to keep kids out of mom and dads hair for 18 years?
