I once heard that they hit #1 in 1958 with "The Chipmunk Song".

yes...that is true...it was also the first and only Christmas song to hit #1 duribg the rock and roll era...AND it was the lowest rated song EVER on the old "American Bandstand" show...oh...and the voice behind the 'Munks was a dude named Ross Bagdasirian...his son actually revived Alvin, Simon and Theodore in the '80s...hope I helped

I hate to admit it, but I remember when this was #1 (I was a kid, and this song definitely appealed to kids). 1958 sounds about right. This song forever changed Christmas music. Okay, maybe that's an exageration.
