Smarter? Yes, I know there are, I have met many of them.

Wiser? No. Only experience gives you wisdom.

I am one of the 40's you mentioned in your question and I can see how some would think kids are smarter. To some degree children are more experienced with electronic gadgets and gizmos due to their exposure to video games, computers , cell phones, and more. But adults are wiser in the decision making process and the older the person is the wiser they are. . I don't believe age is a real factor in "smarts". I am very grateful to have older and wiser people around, because even at 40, I still need advice from the older folks once in a while.

Many children who attend school may SEEM smarter than the adults that they meet, but what they are comparing isn't the same. A child or a teenager who has just stuffed their brain with historical, scientific, and mathematical factoids will certainly appear to be more intelligent than an adult who hasn't studied those subjects in several years. The thing is, the adult may have temporarily forgotten them, but if he or she refreshed his or her memory by reading the textbook of the student, the playing field has almost leveled. I say ALMOST leveled because the adult (if he or she is of average intelligence) will always have more knowledge than the teenager, UNTIL the teenager grows up a bit more and acquires skills that are required to hold a job. Knowledge does not equal intelligence, and intelligence does not equal wisdom. It is great to have all three, but a teenager has no hope to have all three until he or she has experienced more of life.

Smart denotes intelligence, and I don't think children have more capacity to learn these days, however what is being taught is a higher order of thinking. Back in the 50's you might learn mathematical computation, but now you would learn the computation, the reason for it, and several applications thereof. Kids are more technologically oriented, but seem to less creative. Different times, call for different "smarts".

Yes, kids know how to use cell phones, computers, all of those playstation/gameboy thingies and anything else electronic because that is how we are growing up, surrounded by technology.

But they are not smarter when it comes to life and life experiences.

Decidedly. Frankly, after a certain age, adults seem to lose IQ points, as they become less open-minded.
