using a scan tool it can be reset to start in first,but after a day or so it goes back to starting off in second.service transmission message stays on.

well need to know what mtr you have if its a northstar mtr its anyones guess but if not its a 4L60 HYDROMATIC that has gone into failsafe mode to save its self from further internal damage.get to a shop .

sounds like a computer problem. proably needs to be replaced some have a computer for just transmission and some have computer for both transmission and engine. Either way computer needs to be checked.

try resetting the down shift cable.
