Nylon masonary line (like brick layers and block layers use) works well and comes in nifty bright colors. Get it at hardware and building supply stores cheap.

Back in the 70s, when macrame was the "in" craft, there was a special kind of cord to use. Maybe craft stores carry it now, because macrame is back.
Nylon cord is good as is hemp. You can buy nylon cord at craft stores and at home improvement stores. I am not sure where you buy hemp. It's legal, I just don't know where you buy it.
Try "Googling" 'hemp + stores' and see what hits you get. Hopefully, not a lot of junky sites for illegal stuff.

I have heard of people crocheting with plastic bags from the store. They cut the bag into a circular strip!! Weird. But who knows. It could be recycling!!! :)

twine is a good medium. it will be a bit rough to work with but after time and wear it will soften up. (I'm talking about the twine that you use to tie up mail packages.)
