Depends on what kind you have. Guppies, mollies, and platies are among the more popular livebearers (they actually give birth to fully formed babies), whereas goldfish, danios, bettas, and many more are egg-layers. Look into what kind of fish you have, and you will learn more.

I'm assuming you have these fish in a fully cycled tank with adequate filtration and aeration, and your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/pH/kH levels are within a safe range. Otherwise, you fish will not be comfortable enough to breed.

Good luck.

Fish reproduce by the female laying eggs in a nest (most fish) and the male ejecting sperm on them. Some fish (like many sharks) mate like most animals and bear live young. Not all sharks bear live young.
Just a bit of shark trivia - an already hatched-out in the womb baby shark will eat some of its less-developed siblings.

depends on what kind of fish.. guppies are live breeders.. that means baby are born alive. South American Cichlids are egg layers.. African Cichlids are mouth breeders... They hold on to their fresh fertilized egg in their mouth, until they hatch... meanwhile, mother starves while caring for their baby. if you see african cichlid not eating, but has mouthful of something, she maybe carrying the baby..
