Wow... what a question. I would have to agree that a child is a child as soon as it is concieved. However, the law in most states will not treat a fetus like a person legally until after 22 weeks...each state is different.

If you want the baby then yes most women/ people call it a baby as soon as the woman is pregnant. Medically it is a baby when it can survive outside the womb, about 7 to 8 months.

In the United States a baby is a child capable of surviving for more than several hours or days without continuous application of intensely artificial means. The Supreme Court has set that age at 22 weeks (five and one-half months). Under that age typically a fetus will not independently survive due to lack of maturity in various bodily functions.
Many people confuse "life" with "functioning viability" -- the instant an egg and sperm unite it is life, as is the sperm and egg living. However, a sperm or egg or fetus under the age of 22 weeks cannot survive independently outside of artificial means.
So for me, life begins at conception. However, a baby is a survivable human being -- I was three months' premature -- born at 24 weeks; a survivable age! And even though I am an adult, my 82-year-old mother still calls me "her BABY"!!!!

The moment its concieved.
I dont get the its a fetus until its born...does it just magically change to something different the moment its born ?? Does it not think, move, have a heartbeat within weeks of conception? So how is that not a baby? Guess I shouldnt get so bent out of shape, most people who have the "its a fetus" mentality are either men or have never had children..lol!!

a fetus is not legaly considered a baby until it takes it's first breath outside the womb. However, I am 7 months pregnant and feel that she is definately a baby no matter what legalities say.
I guess it's just in your point of view really!

Since when does a point of view change anything? If there is a waterfall flowing down a mountainside, but it is entirely hidden from civilization, does that in any way change that it is a waterfall? If a doe and her fawn drink from a pool of cool mountain water at the base of that waterfall, yet it still has never been seen or heard by human senses, does it exist to any lesser degree?
Life begins at conception. To believe otherwise is to be in denial.

When the sperm meets the egg. Fetus, embryo, and such terms are scientific terms describing the stages of a developing offspring. The child is a baby from that moment of conception.

i've found it depends on whether the woman wants to be pregnant or not! if you are really trying to have a baby, i think that the second you know you are pregnant it's a "baby" whereas if it's unexpected or unwanted, it's a fetus.
Just my opinion... i think the person above is right -- technically it's a fetus until it's born.

as soon as the egg is fertilized.... And as far as that goes... Just in case you want to know the nervious system is one of the first things to form so when the doctors say abortions don't hurt the baby they are dead wrong

I totally agree. A baby is conceived after labor, but before they pull out the afterbirth.
