i have some friends of mine who really hate each other they cant stand each other should they stay together for the children??

Nope, if you hate each other, get out, regardless of having offspring. And I think people who say that they are "staying together for the children" are using a sorry cop-out because they're too chicken to split up. I think it's healthier that the children aren't exposed to the constant bickering of their parents anyway.

NO. The kids know the parents hate each other, they hear them fight or say bad things to each other, and the kids end up completely messed up when it comes to relationships later. (my brother-in-law is an example of that). My best friend won't leave his wife not cause it's better for the kids if they stay together but cause then she's miserable too. I don't think people really sit down and think or realize what this does to the poor kids.

No. It will be hard on everyone but it would be better in the end. The parents are probably fighting and being mean to each other and the kids will and are picking up on the tension. Also, the kids are at a learning stage and they will grow up acting the same way towards other people. Then the pattern will continue. If it was my family, I would be getting into some family counseling-FAST!

No, no NOOO, don't do it. Your children are important, but you will pull your hair out if you are miserable. If it doesn't work than it doesn't work. Sometimes the parents need to be happy to be happy towards the kids. The parents should remain civil for the kids, but definitely not together.
