The best way to remove glass from a metal window is to use a heat gun to soften the putty. Don't use a torch. The paint could contain led and will be harmful to you .Also look for wire clips that look like bobby pins they hold the glass into the metal frame.I take its a metal frame because its rusted.

You can use a propane torch or a heat gun to soften the glazing putty. it will release and fall out. There won"t be any glazing points in a steel frame. Be sure to prime and paint the sash prior to installing the new glass and putty. Instead of glazing points in the metal sash there might be some spring clips, try to reuse them if possible.

I have always used duct tape and pliers to pull out old glass. You might use a screwdriver too. The key point is the duct tape so the glass shards stay together

if you pry, peel , chip out the glazing putty along the sides, and remove any window points (little metal triangle wedges) should be a cinch..

if really rusted with gunk and crap put some TSP or stripper on first.
