Okay, here goes:
1) You could think of the Christ as being the disembodied "Word" or "First Thought" or "Son" of the Singularity known as the Father, or Ein Soph, or Trogoautoegocrat. Then, Jesus was the embodiment of this divine Christ, who pre-existed the Creation itself, remember. When Jesus was returned to the heavens, He set aside his carnal "coats", and reclaimed His true eternal essence, one aspect of a three-brained Diety known as God.
2: Or, you can say that Jesus only attained to the being of the Christ when He was baptized in the water by John, and the Holy Ghost or Spirit indwelled in Him, the ghost being yet another aspect of the three-brained Singularity or First Cause we call God. By this view, notice that anyone before or since this time of Jesus who puts on fully the complete annihilation of the mortal ego in favor of the divine mind of Spirit, this one can also be thought of as the Christ. Jesus Christ would be a Son of God among many sons(and daughters)of God. I like this second view quite a bit, since it squares with my own "gnostic" tendencies. Sincerely, UC Steve.

Good question. In theory, they should be the same. My guess is that being in Jesus identifies more with his human side, the side that went out and helped people by healing them and giving them food and drink. Being in Christ probably refers more to his divine nature, resting in the security of the Almighty God.
In the Bible, people around Jesus often asked if Jesus could really be "The Christ," the one the prophets spoke of.

NO, Jesus is the Christ. (Jesus Christ). There is the GOD HEAD which is the Father, Spirit and Son, but they are all GOD.

Respectfully, w.o. any hostility to the new testament ,
the term being "in" Christ, unless one means the colloquial
"being into" is non-sensical.
Language is a fairly fixed sharable reference system, this is why it works, and you simply cannot be "in" Christ. You can say you practice his teachings, or that you love him, but if you say you are
"in" him you are damaging language (ever so slightly) or you
provoke an image in which you sit bloodied inside the eviscerated body of a beared tall man. His doctrines may be "in you" (interpreted as having entered your brain". But you are not inside him.
Good luck. I guest I am a Saffireophile...;-)

The word translated as "Christ" is the Greek word for "annointed" as in annointed with oil. It's a term that is used for one who has been chosen and called by God to serve in a specific capacity. Jesus is "The" Christ meaning He is "the" one and only Savior who was prophecied about from times of old.
When Jesus was preaching in the synagogue, He read this passage and said that "today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing".
Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor...
He didn't finish off the passage because that time is yet to come to pass when He returns to judge those who have rejected Him and to comfort those who have accepted Him.
2....and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.
