He took the following classes: a 2 hour credit art, a 3 hour credit history, a 4 hour credit science course, a 3 hour credit mathematics course, and a 1 hour science lab. He received a “B” in the art class, an “A” in the history class, a “C” in the science class, a “B” in the mathematics class, and an “A” in the science lab. What was his GPA if the letter grades are based on a 4 point scale? (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0)

Here you go! I hope this helps you out. I copied what some other guy said, he was mean about it. :)

Art B = 2x3 = 6 points
Hist A = 3 x4 = 12 points
Sci C = 4x2 = 8 points
Math B = 3x3 = 9 points
Lab A = 1 x 4 = 4 points

Total points = 39
Total credits 13
39/13=3.0
GPA = 3.0

It comes out to a 3.0 GPA.

(3+3+4+4+4+2+2+2+2+3+3+3+4)/13 = 3.0

Each grade counts once per hour. A 3 credit hour class will make the grade count 3 times. A 4 credit hour course, 4 times. Add up the corresponding grades and divide by the number of hours.

Calculated weighed average by summing all Credit*Grade points and divide by number of Credits as follows:

(2*3+3*4+4*2+3*3+1*4)/(2+3+4+3+1)

2006-06-29 14:44:11 · answer #3 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

The answer is 3.0.

First add up the grade points earned for each class
(Credit hour of each class x points per class = grade points)
For example, 2 credit hour art class x 3 point for a B = 6 grade points

Second sum up all of the grade points earned
(Total grade points)
6 for art, 12 for history, 8 for science, 9 for math, 4 for science lab = 39 points

Third divide the total grade point for all the classes by the credit hours taken

=39/13 which equals 3.0

This is an example of a weighted average. The weight is the number of credit hours the class is worth. Obviously, an A in a class that meets 5 days a week is worth more than an A in a class that meets once.

So, the value is determined by the letter.

You recieve that number of points for each hour of the class.

If you are taking a 4 hour class and get a B, it is worth 12 points toward your average because you really get that B four times.

Multiply the number of hours the class meets by the value of the letter grade for that class. Add all these up and divide by the total number of hours of classes taken. This will then give you your per credit average.

multiply the # of credits for each class by the GPA of the class. Add these up and divide by the total # of credits.

(2*3 + 3*4 + 4*2 + 3*3 + 1*4)/(2+3+4+3+1) = 3

I may have missed one but that's how you do it.

if the credits matter then it is 3
just average the numbers out
(3+4+2+3)/4=3

if they dont matter then it is 3.2
just average the numbers out
(3+4+2+3+4)/5=3.2
