values are aquired if it is something that you strongly believe in like for me no sex before marriage and it becomes a value if you believe in it so much.

I believe values are acquired through how you view your experiences and what you are exposed to.

For instance, if you were brought up in a home with one of your parents being a liar, and the other an honest parent, you could value dishonesty because this is what has worked for your home and you in your young life. Or you could value honesty, because you did not enjoy growing up with deceit and choose to live an honest life. The deciding factor(s) would be how you interpret your experience. Did you like being lied to or lying to get your way? Did you wish you weren't lied to?

They say your earliest experiences are what shape who you are. By that analogy, you could be led to believe what you "learn" in your early childhood from what surrounds you will be what determines your values.

Some people think that the parents are the main source of values. While the parents may provide the foundation, I believe we form our values independently, through our own experiences.
There are racists, for example, who raise their children to hate others, but when the kid gets into the real world they realize that their parents were full of it and fall in love with someone of another race.
I think we learn values based on the truth we choose to accept based on our own experiences.

One's values primarily come from one's parents but are also determined in part by one's friends and teachers, in that order. As one grows older one's friends have a progressively larger impact in determining one's values.
