It's very possible that you have a virus, or spyware, or even more probable, a trojan. Clean it out, and it should be faster. Also try defragmenting the hard drive as well.

Install AVG free.grisoft.com and scan Hard Drive.
Download Spybot search and destroy. Scan and repair.
Download Adaware Personel Edition and Do and Deep Scan.
Defrag your drive. Right click my computer, Manage, Disk Defragmentor, Defrag button.
Start, Run, MSconfig, startup tab, Compare that list with this website to uncheck processes you dont need.

restart your machine and test it.

Start>:Run> type msconfig then click on "start up" tab.
see how many things are checked there and if you can uncheck what you think you don't need.
that will disable them from starting up when the computer opens

your hard drive is probably fragmented with many files
that is if you download a lot and compose stuff..
