If you are bi-polar, Wellbutrin can make some people who are bi-polar agitated. It is not usually used alone because it is not effective for mania.
Effective Mood Stabilizers include Lithium, Depakote, Tegretol and Lamictal.
Lithium requires frequent blood tests. People using Lithium have to avoid strenuous activity and outdoor activities in hot weather because dehydration is very, very dangerous for people taking Lithium. Depakote is very good but should not be taken with pepcid, a common over the counter antacid, because there is a possible drug interaction that can cause bruising, blood count problems and liver damage, again routine blood test are required. Lamictal is very good because there are no blood test required and it is effective. However, there is a very, very rare side-effect that can be lethal.
Some people with bi-polar disorder also need anti-psychotic medicine to help with mania, hyperactivity marked by grandiose and/or delusional thinking. These include Zyprex, Seroquel and Geodon.
Some people with bi-polar disorder require additional medication for depression. Wellbutrin is considered the best of these. as you mentioned it can help some people quit smoking. It may have some mood stabilizing properties, especially when used in conjunction with other mood stabilizers. It is the least likely of antidepressant to trigger a manic episodes, w antidepressant can. SSRI's like Effexor and Paxil and Prozac are occasionally used.
Trazadone is often prescribed for sleep. Some doctors are prescribing Lunesta for sleep for bi-polars.
you did not say whether you are seeing a psychiatrist or a family practice doctor. It sounds like your disorder has not yet been properly stabilized, yet. Most doctors can manage medications for bi-polar disorder once the person is stable, but if your illness is not yet well controlled it is real must to see a psychiatrist.

PS These days with all the new medications and proper management, people with bi-polar disorder can live long, healthy and productive lives. This was not always true for many in the past.

wellbutrin to quit smoking?!
oy. "doctors." that stuff is awful, i'd suggest not taking it!

health can usually be preserved by three things which most people don't want to do -- exercise, diet, and healthy emotional outlets.

see an acupuncturist, one with an LaC liscense. acupuncture is VERY effective with mood related issues -- and they can address smoking too. although if you're dealing with serious mental illness -- bipolar, depression -- acupuncture may be limited in it's scope. at the very least, it will help you feel better and is quite calming.

check out www.wholehealthmd.com, there is LOTS of good info on that website about alternative therapies, diet/recipes, various supplements and herbs, medicines, etc.

Wellbutrin is known to help some people quit smoking, but it is a mood stabilizer...

Other meds for depression are Depakote, Lamictol, Paxil, etc...

Wellbutrin doesn't make you want to quit smoking, it just keeps you from choking people while you quit. If that isn't working for you, contact your doctor, and ask him what else he can give you.

Talk to your doctor about it openly. If he is not knowledgeable and cooperative, find another doctor.
