Does anyone know what the difference is between hearing the baby's heartbeat with an ultrasound or with a doppler? I've been told the chance of miscarriage goes down significantly when you hear the heartbeat but I don't know if that means from both of them or just one or the other. We heard the heartbeat at 7 weeks with an ultrasound so I am hoping everything is fine. Thanks for any help.

Doppler is a little hand held machine that allows you to actually hear the heart beat only... no neat little pictures...

Ultrasound shows you pictures of the baby with no noise involved at all.

You heard the heartbeat with the doppler, not the ultrasound. As others have already said, the ultrasound gives you an image. The heartbeat usually can't be heard with the doppler until about 10 weeks, and the chance of a miscarriage decreases the further along you get.

An ultrasound produces an image on a screen that you see, a dopplar is like a microphone for your insides. The reason they say the chance of miscarriage decreases after you hear the heartbeat, is because you CAN hear the heartbeat. If the heartbeat isn't able to be found, it could be that something isn't quite right, or it may mean that the doctor simply can't locate the heartbeat due to positioning.

The doppler may also not be able to pick up the heartbeat until the 10th - 12th week of pregnancy. The ultrasound is able to pick up the heartbeat much earlier at around 6-6.5 weeks.

The doppler is the instrument used to hear the heartbeat. The ultrasound you had just had doppler capabilities.
