Leonard actually has a good critical reputation. A few will reject all works in the popular genres he works in (crime fiction and, earlier, westerns) but that is just stuffiness. The books are fun, quick reads but still well-written, funny and Leonard is a master of swift characterization and dialogue.
I do think his earlier works tend to be tauter, and often, better -- some of his later works are a bit lazy in plotting, relying mostly on "quirky" criminals and funny exchanges.

I read Get Shorty and really did not like it. Maybe I need to try another one of Elmore's books. What is your favorite. 60% of a Stephen King's books is BS he could of left out. Get to the story already. I did listen to Cell on audio and thought it was ok. Better than most of his stuff. My favorite authors are: Dean Koontz (Intensity, The Taking, The Face, Dark Rivers of the Heart, Dragon Tears, Velocity all are excellant), Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child (you got to read Riptide, Reliquary (this sequel to Relic was a thrill a minute), Stephen Hunter (Dirty White Boys, The Day Before Midnight are a couple of his best. But I really loved Pale Horse Coming, but you have to read Hot Springs first). As for excellant "trash" try Off Season, Off Spring, and Joyride by Jack Ketchum. Some scary stuff. Happy Reading.

I love Elmore Leonard books he writes quirky characters better than just about any author I have ever read. As for your professor I refer you to the Harvard professor that gave his student a F on his thesis that outlined the plan for over night delivery using a centralized sorting facility, yes he later started Fed Ex.

I like Leonard's books, they are fun, fast moving and well written. Even after you have read three of them, the fourth does not seem like a cookie cutter copy of the first three.
