When this car was given to me last month, they said the gaskets on the heads needs to be replaced, comes to find out, there is no gaskets on the heads now. How serious is this and can I do the gaskets myself?

motor will have to be pulled out of car. not hard but time consuming. after gaskets are installed, head bolts need to be torqed to spec. and in a certain pattern. Buy a repair manual from your local auto parts store for v.w. It will show you this process

What baja said but after you pull off the upper block have it checked for flatness if it's warped take it to machine shop and have it milled.
